I am not one to have regrets. I usually say what is on my mind, it sometimes gets me in trouble, but at least I am honest. If I don’t like something, I change it (ask my family and friends) the furniture in my house doesn’t stay in one place for long. Needless to say I try and live my life to the fullest. I do have one though. One simple regret. My biggest regret would be my finances. I do wish I would have listened to those wiser than me and saved a little more. I wish I would have met Mary Erl about 10 years ago to help me with a plan for my money. I would have been in a much better situation. It’s never too late, right? I mean millionaires have been made in 10 years... It could happen… Who wants to buy or sell a house and help me get there?
Enough about me, let’s talk about why YOU need to meet Mary Erl! We met up at the new Lucky Penny’s in Lindenhurst to talk about her career and the educational talk she will be giving at the LLV Chamber of Commerce’s Springfest at Lakes HS March 31, 2019.
With all the education we receive before we are 18, I don’t ever remember taking a personal finance class. A class that teaches you how to manage money should be a requirement to graduate High School in my opinion. Not everyone goes to college, and even if they do, it isn’t a required course. Almost everyone on the other hand is expected to get a job to make money once they graduate and pay the dreaded taxes.. You should be able to know basic money management and tax strategy!
Mary Erl from Nest Builders Financial Advisors, LLC can provide you with this education. Mary is passionate about educating her clients about personal finance, investments and retirement planning so they can reach their financial goals. The one thing that I was impressed with when speaking with Mary was the fact that she is not there to sell you anything. Her sole responsibility is to give you advice to help you make your dreams come true. As her website states:
As a Registered Investment Advisor, Mary is held to the highest standard of working in the client’s best interest. This fiduciary standard, Mary’s objectivity, and the fact that she does not receive commissions or other compensation for the investments she recommends helps earn the trust of those who come to know her.
Her passion for finance started as a kid. As soon as she was able to work and make an income she was meticulous about how she spent her money. As other kids were interested in getting the newest fad, Mary was tracking receipts in a shoe box. She went on to work in IT for over 20 years as a sales support engineer and national product marketing manager before realizing she wanted to become a financial planner. It was during the time spent in this career that gave her the first hand experience with 401k’s and corporate retirement plans that proves to be an asset with many of her clients.
As the turn of the century approached and the IT world started to change, she found herself without a job. It was the perfect time to go back to school and make the change to finance. Mary graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on business and finance. The additional courses and rigorous 10-hour, 2-day CFP® examination, and 3 years’ experience earned her the CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) designation, the most recognized in the industry.
Mary is also active in the Lindenhurst Lake Villa Chamber of Commerce. She served on the board and is currently the President of the Chamber. Mary and her husband, a retired Chicago Fireman, have lived in Lindenhurst since 2001. She is looking forward to taking a step back this year and serve a more behind the scenes role as head of the Chamber’s Ambassador program.
You will have the chance to meet Mary at the SpringFest Expo this Saturday. She is giving a talk titled: How to Retire with Confidence. She will highlight the areas you need to understand when creating a retirement plan:
